Just remember, you make the rules.

In my experience, ideas come from everywhere. The trick is to catch them before they disappear, which is how I started using my notes app to drop ideas. Some of them are half-baked, some are shockingly elaborate, and sometimes they’re just a few words.

So in case no one has told you, you’re allowed to stay small.

This particular one went into the notes some time ago, but for some reason it popped back into my head this week. And when I pulled up the note, all it said was a season number and episode number. It was worth saving.

It’s Grace and Frankie. Season 3, episode 8. The very last scene. (If you have Netflix, go pull it up…the scene starts with 3:15 left in the episode.)

“We’ll be as successful as we can be. Just you and me and our little old lady business.” —says Grace

And for those of you who don’t have Netflix, I’ll try and explain it here. (I tried to find a YouTube clip, but no luck!)

Grace and Frankie start a business together and get a lucrative opportunity. But the marketing mock-ups show them heavily photoshopped. The question is do they take the money or do they stand for the people they started the business to serve. There’s more nuance to it, but that’s the big picture.

It’s a beautiful little scene. It asks a good question. And it does so with humor and relatability. And it serves as a lovely reminder. So in case no one has told you, you’re allowed to stay small. You’re allowed to choose your own path. And may you always define success for yourself.
